Procedures – Upgrading from F Endorsement to Class 1
The F Endorsement will be eliminated on March 1, 2021. Individuals who have an F Endorsement are required to complete a total of 121.5 hours of training and get a Class 1 licence before March 1, 2021 or they will lose Class 1 driving privileges. Students wanting to upgrade to a Class 1 licence fall into four different categories based on previous training at a certified training school:
No Previous Training
- Driver must complete the full MELT training program (121.5 hours).
- Driver training school will record MELT training in the Auto Fund system like any other MELT student.
- Driver training school will send an email to SGI at

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. advising that the student has completed MELT and should be upgraded to a Class 1 driver's licence. - SGI will expire the F endorsement, add a Class 1 and a new driver's licence will be mailed to the customer at no cost.
Less Than a Week of Non-Standard Training Completed
- Driver must complete the full MELT training program (121.5 hours).
- Driver training school will record MELT training in the Auto Fund system like any other MELT student.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. advising that previous training has been credited and the student has completed the 81.5-hour program and should be upgraded to a Class 1 driver's licence. - SGI will add a F endorsement training record and a Class 1 training record to the customer file, expire the F endorsement, add a Class 1 and a new driver's licence will be mailed to the customer at no cost.
Forty-Hour Program Completed
- Driver must complete the 81.5-hour Top-up Program at a certified training school.

Student Driver Resources
The new standards will require drivers seeking a Class 1 commercial license to take a minimum 121.5 hours of training. That includes a minimum of 47 classroom hours, 17.5 hours in the yard, and 57 hours behind the wheel. The new curriculum will include instruction in a classroom, in the yard, and behind the wheel.
